Opposition People’s Democratic Party (HDP) has decided not to nominate a presidential candidate, announced HDP Co-Chair Pervin Buldan.
“We will fulfill our historical responsibility. We will not nominate a candidate in the presidential elections,” Buldan said in a joint press conference with other parties involved in the Labor and Freedom Alliance.
The upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on May 14. The People’s Alliance nominated incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. CHP Chairmail Kemal Kilicdaroglu was announced as the candidate of the National Alliance.
Now, HDP is expected to support Kilicdaroglu’s candidacy. He met HDP officials on Monday in order to receive their support.
“We are passing through a historical moment that will determine the future of the country and society,” said Buldan. “The 13th President of the country will be elected and the parliament will be re-formed. Türkiye’s most basic need is a real and strong democracy based on the sovereignty of the people.”
