Daron Acemoğlu emphasized that in any other country, a chairman would step down after a series of consecutive election losses, pointing out consecutive defeats experienced by the main opposition party Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) leader.
“I am not aware of any other country where the leader of the main opposition party, which has suffered so many election defeats, continues to lead the party,” the MIT economics professor, who was previously appointed as an advisor to Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, stated.
“Did the count of lost elections reach 11 or 12?” he asked citing Kılıçdaroğlu and his party’s several losses in mayoral, general and presidential elections.
Speaking to T24, Acemoğlu said, “If anyone has information, please provide an example.”
CHP leader failed to unseat Erdoğan
Kılıçdaroğlu’s most recent defeat occurred during the elections held in May when the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emerged victorious.
The CHP leader faced opposition to resigning from the post after the last election results. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu was among those who exerted pressure on Kılıçdaroğlu to step down from the party’s leadership.
CHP unveiled its stance on Türkiye’s economic challenges and proposed solutions during the “Call to the Second Century” gathering held in Istanbul in December last year.
As part of this event, CHP Chairman Kılıçdaroğlu introduced a portion of the 70-member expert team, which he referred to as the “supra-political think tank.”
Two professors Jeremy Rifkin and Daron Acemoğlu were among the team members.
