US coronavirus cases close to 5.5 million

US coronavirus cases exceeded 5.5 million Wednesday, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University.

MORE THAN 68.7 MILLION TESTS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED

The Maryland university’s tally counted 5.505.074 confirmed infections and nearly 172,500 deaths, while almost 1.9 million people have recovered from the disease since it first appeared.

Since early July, more than 2.5 million new cases were recorded because of recent spikes.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the highest number of cases and deaths, followed by Brazil.

California, Florida and Texas are the states that have the highest tallies with 640,722, 584,047 and 569,375 infections, respectively.
