Venezuela’s crisis escalated Wednesday, after Trump administration declared Guaido as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

Embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro danced seemingly without a care in the world in Caracas on Saturday before backtracking on an order made on January 24 to expel US embassy personnel.

“I ordered the Foreign Ministry to initiate conversations with Mr. James Story, who served as business manager of the embassy in Venezuela, to establish a mode of representation of Venezuela’s interests in Washington and the United States in Venezuela,” said Maduro.

APPERANT U-TURN
In an apparent U-turn, Maduro said Caracas ‘would maintain an interest office, an office representing the interests of the United States in Venezuela with a minimum staff, and an office representing the interests of Venezuela in Washington.’ Maduro also said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ‘left a meeting’ in a mocking tone, to the crowd’s delight.
The political situation in Venezuela remains unclear after Maduro was sworn in for a second term as president but Venezuelan opposition leader and head of the National Assembly Guaido declared the inauguration illegitimate, declaring himself interim president.
