Turkey’s electricity production increased by 9% in September 2020 compared to the same month last year as production in the country’s industrial sector and electricity consumption in agricultural irrigation increased, according to the latest data reported by the country’s energy watchdog.
Total electricity production was up to approximately 26.5 million megawatt-hours (MWh), from 24.3 million MWh in September 2019, Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) announced in its electricity market report for September.
INDUSTRIAL SECTOR CONSUMPTION SAW THE BIGGEST SHARE
While the easing of the measures taken due to combat the novel coronavirus outbreak increased the country’s industrial production in September, it also supported the activity levels in agriculture.
Turkey produced its electricity from several sources; 30.7% from natural gas, 21% from hydropower, 21.9% from import coal and 11.6% from lignite. Wind, geothermal, biomass, hard coal, asphaltite, solar power and fuel oil generated the remaining share.
Industrial sector consumption saw the biggest share with 41.6%, followed by the commercial sector at 25.5%. Residential consumption ranked third with 22.9%, while agricultural irrigation and street lighting accounted for the remainder.
Natural gas power plants comprised 29.6%, while 25.3% came from hydropower plants and 11.7% from lignite power plants. Imported coal, wind, hydro, geothermal, hard coal, biomass, asphaltite, fuel oil, solar power, naphtha, LNG and diesel also contributed to Turkey’s installed capacity
