Istanbul’s taxi shortage makes airport passengers to wait for hours

A chaotic situation in megacity

Breaking News Turkey

Istanbul is one of the tourist destinations of Türkiye that attracts millions of foreigners every year from all over the globe.

But the insufficient presence of yellow taxis in the megacity is still an unsolved problem despite the high flow of visitors.

A tiresome issue for passengers

A video recorded at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen International Airports once again indicates how the issue remains tiresome for arriving passengers as they have to wait for hours to take a taxi.

Drivers who return from the airport without taking any passengers are considered the source of the problem because only those who are members of the airport’s taxi union are allowed to carry passengers.

“People have been waiting in a 200-meter queue for one hour to get a taxi. Disgrace!” said a passenger in the video. “Taxis to the airport are returning empty. You can only take a taxi from the union.”

This chaotic situation is not new for Türkiye’s megacity. Taxi drivers in the city have been accused of picking up foreigners over local customers.

The number of taxis is almost the same against the growing population

Istanbul’s population, in addition, is steadily rising while the number of cabs remains almost unchanged.

In this condition, scores of Istanbulites reportedly want banned Uber and similar transportation applications to be allowed again in the country.
