Türkiye’s main opposition CHP’s leader claimed on Wednesday that gaining legitimacy for political power requires more than an election.

Speaking at an event organized at the party’s headquarters in the capital Ankara, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said, “Political power does not gain legitimacy solely through elections.”

Receiving the people’s vote alone does not automatically establish legitimacy, according to Kılıçdaroğlu.

Following an unsuccessful attempt to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Türkiye’s elections on May 28, the opposition figure finds himself under scrutiny regarding his leadership.

Kılılıçdaroğlu also faced the formidable task of upholding a contentious opposition alliance in anticipation of the local elections in March 2024

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu is among those who challenged Kılıçdaroğlu’s leadership after he lost the presidential elections to Erdoğan.

However, CHP’s leader is in favor of Imamoğlu serving another five-year term as the Mayor of Istanbul.

Pointing out the upcoming local elections, Imamoğlu stated, “We cannot expect different outcomes by repeating the same actions. Henceforth, our dedication remains steadfast in winning over every heart through our continued efforts.”

“The current government has no moral and political legitimacy,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu further claimed.

He added, “Without scrutinizing the moral and political legitimacy of a government, it will persist in viewing itself as legitimate and justifying any unlawful actions as legitimate practices.”
