Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that he believes that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin wants the grain corridor agreement to continue.
In his speech at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport, Erdoğan touched on Russia’s decision regarding the Black Sea Grain Initiative before he departs for Saudi Arabia.
The duration of the agreement signed between Russia, Ukraine, the United Nations (UN), and Türkiye led by Ankara came to an end today. Russia said it will immediately return to the agreement if the conditions related to Russia are met.
Erdoğan expects Putin to extend the deal’s duration
“Despite the statement made today, I believe that Russian President Putin wants this humanitarian bridge to continue,” Erdoğan said pointing out Moscow’s decision.
Putin is expected to visit Türkiye next month.
“We can take our steps with a phone call with Mr. Putin without waiting for August,” said Erdoğan.
The UN also offered Russia its reintegration into the SWIFT payment system in exchange for extending the grain initiative.
Türkiye’s President will meet Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on Monday as part of his visit to the country.
