Türkiye’s trade minister said they are fighting to curb inflation.

“Fighting inflation is our first and foremost goal,” Ömer Bolat said, who spoke at a program in Türkiye’s southern Mersin province.

Reminding that Türkiye has grown by a yearly average of 5.4 percent in the last 20 years and the national income has reached 906 billion dollars, Bolat said: “We follow a reform and service-oriented policy to increase welfare and ensure social justice.”

He said they are working to ease burdens on exporters’ shoulders.

The country has set a target of $400 billion in goods exports and $200 billion in service exports for 2028.

Trade Minister Ömer Bolat speaks at a program in Mersin, August 10, 2023.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz has said there was agreement at a meeting of government officials and business leaders on the need for a patient and persistent approach to combat the country’s chronic high inflation.

Speaking after the meeting, Yılmaz said that it was important to limit government spending and that the government’s medium-term program will include structural reforms, with more flexible policies planned for companies to finance exports and production.

Mehmet Şimşek, the Turkish treasury and finance minister, said they are determined to implement rule-based policies in line with international norms to ensure macro-financial stability and increase its resilience to shocks.

Türkiye’s net foreign exchange reserves surged nearly $5 billion last week, with total reserves up almost $2 billion, according to bankers’ calculations.
